Stephanie Wong, MD
I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA and received my bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA. After taking four gap years to complete my pre-medical prerequisites and apply for medical school, I attended UC Riverside for medical school. I subsequently completed my residency training in adult psychiatry at UCLA, and I feel fortunate to stay at UCLA as a geriatric psychiatry fellow. My interest in geriatric psychiatry stems from a more personal experience where a close family member of mine struggled with significant depression and received care from a geriatric psychiatrist, which ultimately resulted in his recovery. During residency, I found the most fulfillment in working with older adults, appreciating the field’s nuanced approach to complex comorbidities and emphasis on deprescribing. I look forward to further honing my clinical skills during fellowship so that I may continue advocating for the older adult population.

Residency: UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences
Hobbies/Outside Interests: reading, attending music concerts, traveling, watching football, spending time with my husband, 15-month-old son, and dog.

Geriatric Psychiatry Fellows 2023-24
Hua Chai, MD, PhD, PGY-5
I am in year one of a two-year UCLA clinical/research Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship, which allows me to pursue my interests in both clinical geriatric psychiatry and basic research. In addition to providing holistic clinical care to older adults with neuropsychiatric conditions, I am exploring how astrocytes change in the aging brain using animal models. In the future, I aim to explore astrocytic contributions to neuropsychiatric illnesses such as delirium to discover new avenues for prevention and treatment. Beyond clinical work and research, I am committed to increasing representation in academic psychiatry through mentorship and structural change.
Hometown: moved around a lot so influences from Xi’An, China, Nashville, TN, and Mahwah, NJ.
